Newaygo County Winter Sports

Michigan is the perfect place for the winter holiday; where else are there thousands of acres primed with the perfect blend of powdery white stuff for cross country skiing, snowshoeing, dog-sledding and ice fishing.

There are various places in Newaygo county to enjoy these wide array of activities, so be sure to look through your options and pick the place that best fits you and what you enjoy doing most. Winter is a spectacular time to bundle up & enjoy the great outdoors.

Ice Fishing

Newaygo County is no stranger to ice fishing. We have a wide variety of lakes and ponds to choose from when it comes to ice fishing. You can come out to Fremont Lake or the Croton/Hardy Pond which will host the North American Ice Fishing Tournament in 2013. You can also try Hess, Bills, or Brooks Lake. If you’re farther up north, stop at Diamond Lake to enjoy a day on the frozen ice.

Ice Skating

Both Fremont & Newaygo have local ice skating rinks in Branstrom Park and the city of Newaygo. When the conditions are right and ice is smooth, there are many local lakes & ponds that are wonderful for skating.

Cross Country Skiing

Although we do not feature any groomed trails, the North Country Trail, along with our state and national forest land offers some opportunities to go out and enjoy yourself along some of our best trails. The beauty and solitude of venturing out among the tall trees is a great way to spend a winter afternoon.

Snowmobile Trails

If you head out towards our Welcome Center on M37, there is a parking/staging right across the road that you can take advantage of if snowmobiling is your favorite winter activity. Be sure to bring out your sled and take off through some of the best snow conditions around! The trail connects to miles & miles of trails up into Lake County for endless fun!
